American Flag Subscription Program (AFSP)

Project Overview

The Kiwanis Club of Nashville flag program is a community service project, fundraising activity, as well as a membership social engagement activity, and community outreach activity. It is a perfect implementation of our Core Value of Patriotism as promulgated in the Objects of Kiwanis, exhibited by our club's World War I monument erected in Nashville's Centennial Park in 1923, and practiced at every club meeting with the pledge to our nation's flag and singing a patriotic song.

The Flag Project was conceived as a way to raise funds for the Kiwanis of Nashville Foundation fund for young children and youth service projects. The flags are displayed by Nashville Kiwanians and their friends and family who place the flags around Davidson County and adjacent counties on six nationally recognized holidays each year. The six holidays are Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriots’ Day (September 11th) and Veterans’ Day. The flags are generally deployed on the Saturday before the holiday and collected on the Saturday following the holiday.

The project is generally limited to locations close to club members, but there are residential areas as well as businesses that have subscriptions for the service of having one or more flags placed in front of their home or business for the week of each holiday. Each flag subscription is $50 per year and the Kiwanis Club of Nashville flag project has a goal of over 2,000 subscriptions grossing $100,000 per year. The proceeds from this project will fund Kiwanis Club programs, projects, and grants of the Kiwanis of Nashville Foundation as directed by the Board of Directors.

The project is divided into neighborhood routes of approximately 25 to 100 subscriptions each, and each route is deployed and collected by a crew of two to six volunteers. Each route has a captain who is knowledgeable of the specific location of each flag holder and the captain supervises the volunteers during the deployment and collection of the flags. The volunteers are Kiwanis club members and families, Key Club members, Boy Scouts and even military veterans participating in special service projects coordinated through the veterans’ court. So this flag project is a community outreach project, a membership social activity as well as a fundraising activity.

Each flag is a 3’x5’ nylon all weather flag on a 10’ long ½” galvanized conduit pole, and many are branded with a 1” Kiwanis sticker. The project aims to keep the cost per assembled flag at less than $15 and the flags have an average life of about three years.

The Kiwanis Club of Nashville flag project is a unique signature project that provides a fundraising activity, as well as a membership social engagement activity, and community outreach activity. At the same time the Davidson and adjacent counties are beautified by the abundance of American flags around the area on each holiday week. Images of the flag project often appear in our local printed and social media.
