The projects of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennesseehave been popular with our club as well as our Circle K and Key Club members for many years. The agency's mission is "To feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues in our community." Please see their website for all the details about the amazing work the agency has done in Middle Tennessee since 1978.
Today, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is one of the largest and most comprehensive of over 200 food banks and food distribution centers nationwide. During the 2016/2017 fiscal year, Second Harvest distributed more than 32 million pounds of food to more than 490 Partner Agencies, providing more than 26 million meals of food to hungry children, families and seniors throughout our 46-county service area.
During our most recent 3 hour shift at the Metro Area facility in September with the Vanderbilt Circle K Club, KIPP Nashville Collegiate Key Club and our Nashville Kiwanians, a record was established for the number of weekend backpacks (plastic bags holding sufficient food for two breakfasts and two lunches for students who participate in the Free and Reduced Meals Program serving some of the low-income population of Middle Tennessee.
The goal is to schedule at least four to six such projects at SHFB each Kiwanis year.
